New Feature: Firmware Upload


We just released a new feature that allows you to have firmware programmed onto your devices during the manufacturing process. 

On the project page you'll now see a "Firmware" tab.  On the lower left hand corner there is an option to upload your own firmware. 
Once you upload your file you can select which reference designator you need the firmware to be added to. You can, of course, also delete the file if you need to provide an updated one.  Once you place an order the firmware files will automatically be included with the rest of the details required for manufacturing. Typically the programming for high volume is done before assembly and for low volume after assembly. If you have any special instructions you can use the issues system to communicate with the factory or contact us directly.

Introducing Organizations





We're often asked "How can I allow others to view and edit my project?". Organizations create a GitHub-like space for hardware projects, making it easy to set up teams and collaborate with your peers.

If you make a change to a project shared inside an organization, it will be visible to all members. This includes uploading new revisions, specifying substitutes, supplying pricing, marking components as consigned, and placing orders.

Add and Consign Parts


A question that we've frequently been asked is "How should I deal with parts which are out of stock or not available on CircuitHub?" We recently released several features which let you supply your own pricing, add parts that aren't in our database, and consign parts.

Supply pricing: If you know of a source for the part you can quickly add it by clicking "Supply Pricing" on the BOM drop down.




Add parts to CircuitHub: If the part is not available in the CircuitHub database you can add it by clicking "Add part to library."



Consign parts: You can also select parts which you would like to provide yourself. Once you place your order you will be given instructions on where to send your parts.

Fork Button: Quickly design custom hardware


We're very excited to announce a feature that we've had in the works for a while now: forking projects on CircuitHub.


With the fork button you can easily use an existing project as a starting point for your own design. Explore our community of open source hardware to find a starting point for your design. By sharing design content and supply chain we can all design and manufacture better hardware, cheaper and faster.

BeagleBone GamingCape Group Buy




We're very excited to be collaborating with BeagleBoard.org for a group buy of assembled GamingCapes.

The BeagleBone GamingCape transforms your BeagleBone into a full fledged hand-held gaming console capable of playing all the classics such as NES, Gameboy, Sega GameGear, and even Doom. Basically the GamingCape enables you to bring all of your favorite childhood games back to life. Pretty sweet if you ask us!  

The Gaming Cape was designed by Max Thrun as part of the TI 2013 Intern Challenge. You can learn more about the GamingCape on his blog

You could also quickly design and manufacture a custom variant on CircuitHub.

Introducing Footprint Verification


We're excited to announce the beta release of footprint verification! One of the most common errors we have seen in the projects we have manufactured is footprints that have been drawn incorrectly. This can result in need for rework, additional time and cost, project delays, and potential performance issues. To fix this, we've added footprint verification within your BOM that provides socially curated proof that your footprints are correct. Footprint verification helps you to spot potential mistakes in your design before it goes into production.

The footprints are annotated with different indicator icons:

  1. Verified: This means we have seen this footprint before and it has been used in at least one other order that has been manufactured. Verified footprints are marked with a "". The number next to the check mark indicates how many orders this footprint has been used in.
  2. Warning: A "" icon indicates that the footprint is different from an existing verified footprint, but but is still similar to other non-verified footprints on CircuitHub. It is not necessarily incorrect, but is worth double checking.
  3. Incorrect: Footprints marked with an "" are different from an existing verified footprint and do not have any other footprints that are similar. This footprint is likely to be incorrect.
  4. Tool tip: Footprints marked with an "" have information that may be useful for you such as how many projects have similar footprints.
  5. Unknown: Footprints that do not have any icons mean we do not have any existing footprints to compare your footprint to. 

If you expand a BOM line of a footprint marked with an icon you will see a blue outline. In the case of a correct footprint the outline will be in line with your own footprint (marked in red). The blue outline is showing the footprint with the closest match to your own. This gives you an explanation as to why we think that your footprint may be incorrect.


Footprint verification is still a work in progress and we will be adding additional features shortly such as looking at pin numbers. Please let us know what you think of this new feature and what other DFM features you would like to see. We happily welcome any feedback!

From Import to Quote in Fewer Clicks

As an engineer your time should be spent on designing and perfecting your product, not sourcing parts. At CircuitHub our goal is to help you go from importing your PCB design to receiving a real quote and being able to place an order in as little time and as few clicks as possible. Here's some of the things we've been working on at CircuitHub to help you achieve this:

Unit Price and Availability 
Now when you search for a part after expanding a BOM line, the unit price and how many units are available for that part will show up in the results. We'll also let you know if there is a minimum order quantity (MOQ).  This way you can avoid having to go back and find substitutes for your parts after you've already reconciled your product.



Improved BOM Reconciliation
We're constantly working on improving BOM reconciliation so that you have to do as little work as possible. We've improved our algorithms so that they can better detect the part specifications given by your EDA tool. CircuitHub uses the different fields including part number, manufacturer, footprint value and value given by your EDA tool to automatically reconcile your BOM. CircuitHub also takes data from other reconciled projects on CircuitHub to suggest possible part substitutes.



Quick tip: If CircuitHub did not capture your part number but you have it listed in another value field, go to the left sidebar where all the value fields are located. Click on the one that contains the search terms you would like to use to find your part. The field will automatically be copied and pasted into the Octopart search bar so you don't have to do it manually.

We're very excited about our partnership with Worthington Assembly, a Next Generation Manufacturer based in Massachusetts, known for their high level of customer service and eagerness to work with each customer on a personal level. Worthington has worked on projects including Tessel, an internet-connected micro controller programmable in JavaScript, and RGB-123 Led Matrices.

Worthington believes that when there is a more efficient way of accomplishing a task change is necessary which made them a perfect match for us. They have been in operation consistently since 1976; what has helped them to thrive is their modern approach to manufacturing and their ability and willingness to adapt to the constantly changing industry.

CircuitHub is being deeply integrated within the factory
We are deeply integrating CircuitHub with Worthington in order to optimize the manufacturing process so that we can reduce cost, lead time and risk. Together we'll provide the agility you need to scale your hardware product from prototype to production.

New Fabrication Service: Getting Started

We're very excited about the beta release of our new quoting and fabrication service for PCB projects. Our goal is to remove the time and frustration it takes to source, quote and fabricate PCBs so that you can spend your time designing instead of managing files and spreadsheets.

Click here to see an example of what a project uploaded on CircuitHub. You can also explore the public projects that others have uploaded. Continue reading to learn how to quickly create a project of your own:

1.) Click upload a project.  You will receive a popup asking you to import a project from your Dropbox.


2.) Place your project in the Dropbox/Apps/CircuitHub/projects folder (which will have been automatically created by CircuitHub). Back in CircuitHub, start typing in the name of your folder and CircuitHub will automatically detect it. 



3.) CircuitHub will automatically detect which design tool you are using and the relevant files that it needs.


4.) Click "import project". You'll see that CircuitHub is busy is importing your project. This may take a couple minutes.


5.) Once CircuitHub has imported your project the first thing you'll see is your bill of materials.  If  you scroll down you will also see all of the project detaisl including the schematic, board design, and specificiations. You can also choose to make your project private if you'd like if you forgot to do so when you first imported it. 



6.) Before you'll receive a quote you'll need to reconcile all of the parts in your BOM with real manufacturer parts.

Many of your parts may have been already reconciled for you with parts that have been suggested by CircuitHub. The more projects that are uploaded the better we can auto suggest parts for you. You can disapprove any suggested parts that are not appropriate for the line item by clicking on the "x" next to the part. 



Parts without approved or suggested parts are in red  You'll need to add parts for these line items. To reconcile a part, click on the line item to expand it. CircuitHub uses the unstructured data given by the EDA tool to automatically come up with search terms that match the part attributes. Search for a part via the interface which is powered by Octopart.  Add parts by click the "plus" on the right.  If you have more than one part selected for a line item CircuitHub will select one amongst the pool of candidates based on pricing and availability. On the left you can choose to make parts cosmetic or DNP and can see all the specifications for the line item. 




7.) Once you have reconciled your entire project you'll receive a quote with a breakdown for parts, pcb, and assembly.  Using the slide bars you can selected how many boards you want and when you want them.




8.) Finally, click fabricate and a popup will appear to enter all of your billing details. We handle our payments through Stripe. Once you have submitted your order, go back to the CircuitHub dashboard to see the status of your build. We'll be in touch via email shortly after you place your order.
